Science and the Bible

The philosophical conflict between scientific truth and scriptural truth did not start with the internet in the 1990s.  Paul writes about it in the second letter to Timothy.  "O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called ..."                        (2 Timothy 6:20)
Note that Paul was not against science.  He was against false science.  Science used as a weapon to attack Timothy's faith in God.  It is one thing to believe strongly in the scientific method and to leave room in an infinite universe for other forms of truth.  It is something else altogether to try to use the scientific method to force others to believe in your own personal normalized worldview.

It also was discussed by Galileo in an excellent philosophical discourse in letters he sent to various people explaining his disagreement with the Church higharchy.  One of the most misleading interpretations of the scientific history is the story of Galileo's conflict with the Church of that time period - circa 1630.  We were all taught (or it was implied) that Galileo was a scientific secularist standing up for scientific truth and rejecting scriptural truth.  This is a complete distortion of what actually happened.

For any philosopher or scientist that is interested in the subject of Science vs Religion, CIP recommends the book below:  "Discoveries and Opinions of Galileo" - where you can read his own thought in letters he sent to people explaining the situation.  Particularly note pages (181 - 187) where he gives his own view of how God illuminates truth through scripture and how God illuminates truth through science.  What you will find is a man with a deep faith in the God of scripture and a deep respect for objective scientific method.  He knew how to integrate the two forms of truth.
